I think we are extremely lucky that this market is so close to where we live. Taking the R310 road along Spier and van Rijn Brandy Distillery, we are heading for Stellenbosch…just before the railway bridge behind rows of vines you will spot the parked cars and a white Cape Dutch style house.
There is a parking with lots of trees, which is a blessing in summer…or when it’s very busy you park on a field.
So on most Saturday mornings, when the sun is out, you will find us sitting on the steps behind the market stalls. We are never that early, just before lunch time is perfect for me…
Colourful people find their way to the food stalls, the craft beers, the wine stands, coffee and fresh pressed juices. Students and pensioners, local people and tourists, they all love the Belgian ‘kroketten’ and ‘bitterballen’, the Italian sausages, the Artisan breads, German sachertörte, waffles and cakes, biltong, chocolate, olives and cheeses….
But it’s not only food what the market vendors sell… there are vintage products, glamourous local made jewelry, soft smelling lotions and soap, all sorts of clothing, beautiful hats and scarfs and all the things I forget to mention.
After all the years that we visit the Slow Food Market, we just quickly buy what we need and find a good spot with a view.
Sometimes there is live music… but for me …I love it when there is some French, Italian or jazzy music in the background…enough to enjoy, when there is nobody to talk to and not too loud if you socialize with friends… and it creates a beautiful summery atmosphere!
I love the busyness of this market, just sitting on the steps and watching people passing by. The vibe this market has is my kind of thing….and this relaxing feeling is complete when we meet friends and enjoy a nice glass of Alvi’s MCC…because a Sparkle in Life is just what we need!
